Summer, 1966. Kaoru Nishimi lands in Kyushu for another first day at yet another school, dragging a suitcase and zero expectations. His father keeps getting shipped off on long assignments, so the kid has learned the drill: keep your head down, ace the tests, don't bother unpacking your heart. Then he runs into Sentarou Kawabuchi, the local delinquent everybody warns him about. Turns out the thug plays drums. Badly? No. Beautifully. Sentarou drags him down to the basement of a record shop run by Ritsuko Mukae, Sentarou's childhood friend, and something clicks in Kaoru's chest the first time their instruments lock in together. Classical training meets jazz, and the straight-A loner starts skipping cram school to pound keys until his hands ache. Ritsuko watches from behind the counter, and the three of them drift into something that looks a lot like friendship, except it isn't that simple, because Ritsuko has known Sentarou her whole life and Kaoru is the new variable in the equation. Sentarou has secrets he won't talk about. Ritsuko has feelings she won't name. And Kaoru, who finally found people who make the world loud in the right way, is about to learn that summer ends. So what happens when the music stops?
