The bombs come first. Then the fires, then the silence. Fourteen year old Seita digs through what is left of Kobe and finds his mother burned beyond saving. His little sister Setsuko, four years old, does not understand yet that she will never see her again. Their father is somewhere out at sea with the Imperial Navy, and he is not coming back either. The two of them are alone. A distant aunt takes them in, and for a while there is rice and a roof. But she makes it clear they are a burden, and the children can feel it in every cold look she gives them. So they walk out. They end up in a cave by the river, cooking what they can catch or beg, while Setsuko carries a tin of fruit drops like it is treasure. The war ends, but nothing gets easier. Hunger does not care who wins. People who once seemed kind turn away when the two of them come asking for food, and Setsuko gets weaker with each passing week. Her brother steals to keep her alive. How long can a child hold on when everything he has ever loved is already gone?
