Years of scrubbing floors and taking blows turn her into someone who stares at the ground and expects nothing. Then her father calls her in and drops the news. She is engaged. To Kiyoka Kudou, no less, head of a distinguished family and a military man so cold that every single one of his previous fiancées ran for the door. Miyo packs what little she owns and braces herself for worse than what she is leaving behind. But the man she meets at the Kudou estate does not shout. He does not raise a hand. Kiyoka brings her tea and asks if she has eaten, and Miyo keeps waiting for the trap to snap shut. Her old family is still out there. And the moment they notice she might actually be happy, will they really just let her go?
