A research lab sits on a remote island, and inside it lives a woman almost nobody gets to see. Shiki Magata earned her doctorate at eleven. Now she barely leaves her room. Architecture professor Souhei Saikawa talks his way into a visit, and Moe Nishinosono, the daughter of his old mentor, tags along. She has no business being there. She just wants a look at the famous recluse, and maybe at Saikawa too. Then a body turns up. Locked room, no way in, no way out, and the killing is cold in a way that doesn't fit anywhere on that quiet island. Strange things keep happening to the university group, one after another, until this. Saikawa and Moe start digging, and every answer about Magata pulls another thread loose from her past. What really happened behind that door, and who wanted it to stay shut?
