Yoriko only has eyes for Kanako. The two schoolgirls plan a summer trip together, and then everything goes wrong at the station: Kanako is found bleeding on the tracks, Yoriko stands on the platform in tears. Detective Shuutarou Kiba happened to be on the train that hit the girl, so he takes the case. What looks like a tragic accident keeps pointing back to the Yuzuki family, and especially to Youko, Kanako's sister and a famous actress. Kanako survives surgery but stays unconscious, so Youko hands her over to Dr. Mimasaka, who keeps the girl in a strange box shaped building deep in the forest. Experimental treatment, he says. On the night Kiba and Yoriko come to visit, Kanako is simply gone from her bed. Then the police start finding boxes with the limbs of young girls inside. Every new discovery pulls Kiba deeper into something he cannot name, and some of the threads run back into his own past. With his partners Sekiguchi and Chuuzenji he hunts for Kanako and for whoever is cutting these girls apart. Is the answer hidden in the Yuzuki house, or has it been waiting for Kiba all along?
