The Grimm Variations
Two brothers travel the countryside, gathering old stories from villagers and writing them down. Jacob and Wilhelm come home to their little sister Charlotte, who waits for each new tale like it's a gift. She's curious, innocent, and they adore her. Then one evening, mid story, her face goes quiet and sad. She asks them a simple thing: do you suppose they really lived happily ever after? That question doesn't stay a question. Charlotte starts seeing the tales differently than her brothers ever did. Happily ever after becomes a mask, and what's underneath is colder, stranger, and far more unsettling. The familiar stories you grew up with get turned inside out, and the girl asking the questions is the one pulling at the seams. Is she just imagining the darkness, or was it always there, waiting in the pages?
