Centuries ago, Earth's scientists picked a cheap fix for a crowded planet: dump cockroaches and mold on Mars, let the bugs die, and use their bodies plus sunlight to feed the mold. Clean, simple, cost effective. Nobody asked what the roaches might turn into. By 2577 the first six person crew landed and found hulking humanoid insects with enough strength to tear a ship apart. One warning got back to Earth before the crew died. So humanity sends its elite fighters to take the red planet back. The Annex I squad is still on the surface, still swinging at those things, and the promised cure for the Alien Engine Virus is nowhere closer than it was before. Here is the part nobody signed up for: several squadrons answer to their home countries first, and their real orders have nothing to do with saving anyone. Now the soldiers have to survive the Terraformars in front of them and the allies standing beside them, all while their governments quietly keep score. Who do you trust when the person watching your back was told to let you die?
