The Shimogamo brothers are trying to move on. Yaichirou wants to run the tanuki society and bring back the old shogi tournament, Yajirou is working on his shapeshifting again, and the youngest just keeps showing up at the family factory. Yasaburou, the third son, has no such plans. He hunts a tsuchinoko through the streets of Kyoto and turns every quiet afternoon into a small mess, because the fool's blood in him has to go somewhere. Then Nidaime comes back. He is Professor Akadama's estranged son, a tengu with a grudge that has been sitting and hardening for years, aimed at his father and at Benten, his father's apprentice. Kyoto is a city where humans, tanuki and tengu share the same alleys, and that balance is thin enough already. So Yasaburou does what he does best: he talks, he shifts, he slips between sides that would rather tear each other apart. One wrong word and the tengu, the tanuki, the whole fragile arrangement goes up. Can a tanuki who never takes anything seriously keep three worlds from colliding?
