In old Edo, in a little neighborhood called Nakamachi, fire and flood come so often that people stopped getting attached to their things. Why own a pot when you can rent one? Seiji and Oko, adopted brother and sister, run a shop called Izumoya that lends out futons, clothes, kitchenware, whatever a household needs before the next disaster hits. They're good kids. They know their inventory better than anyone. Here's the thing about some of that inventory: it talks. Leave an object alone for a hundred years and it grows a soul. A tsukumogami. These old kettles and umbrellas and folding screens have ears, and they use them. They eavesdrop on customers, on neighbors, on feuding families all over town, then bring the gossip home and chatter about it in the shop. A married couple's secret argument. A missing heirloom. Somebody's lie that's about to fall apart. Seiji and Oko can't exactly ignore what their merchandise tells them, so they step in, calm the quarrels, and sometimes lend out a spirit to fix what a human broke. But when a rumor arrives that's too messy to untangle with kindness alone, and the tsukumogami start choosing sides, whose story do you believe: the one the people tell, or the one the objects overheard?
