Gabimaru the Hollow has killed more people than he can count, and he is fine with dying for it. There is just one problem: nobody can actually kill him. They try. They fail. Again and again. So the shogun's men bring in Sagiri Yamada Asaemon, a young executioner from a family famous for this sort of work, and she takes a long look at the guy and then simply does not swing. Her theory? He won't die because he loves his wife, and that stubborn love is the only thing still holding him to this earth. So she makes him an offer. Sail to the island of Shinsekyo. Bring back the Elixir of Life and the shogun gets his immortality, Gabimaru gets a full pardon, and maybe he and his wife grow old together after all. Ten other condemned killers are sent along with him, each one handcuffed to their own executioner in case they get any bright ideas about running. The catch: nobody has ever come back from that island with their mind intact. Most never come back at all. The convicts don't know what is waiting for them on those shores, and honestly, neither do the executioners. What's really growing on Shinsekyo, and will any of these eleven murderers live long enough to find out?
