A samurai lord watches his land wither, and he wants power badly enough to turn his back on Buddha himself. Twelve demons answer. They hand him victory in battle and a path to the throne, and all they ask in return is a piece of his newborn son. Each one takes something: arms, legs, eyes, ears, nose, even his skin. The baby comes out as almost nothing at all. And he is still breathing. They dump him in the river and forget he existed. A medicine man fishes him out, builds him prosthetics, blades hidden in the wood, and the boy grows up blind and deaf and numb, wandering a country crawling with demons. Every one he kills gives a piece of him back. His father sits on that stolen power, and the son wants it settled, though getting there means hunting all twelve down first. Then a scrappy orphan, Dororo, latches onto him and refuses to leave. The kid claims to be the greatest thief in Japan. Together they move through a hard, hungry land where mercy is rare. How far can a boy who was traded away for a kingdom get before he has to face the man who made the deal?
