A game company sends 22 an invite to test their new VR title, The Sea in a Box. Inside, it is Lantern Festival in a fishing village on the southern coast, and the locals carry their household gods into the streets for a deity procession. Then 22 and three other testers spot a goddess nobody has ever seen before: Cizhou Shenggu, the Sacred Maiden. Digging into where she came from, they keep bumping into traces of someone tampering with the game from outside. A quiet force is nudging the NPCs around. Outside the headset, 22's sister 33 starts noticing strange behavior from the company's own employees. The corporation has plans it is not sharing. Down in the village, the fishermen are secretly preparing a ritual. And the people standing right next to them are hiding plenty too. So who is really running this test: the company, the thing moving through the NPCs, or someone among the four players?
