Anna Sasaki can't breathe. The asthma attacks keep coming, and she keeps everyone at arm's length: no friends, no talking, just her sketchbook and her foster mother's worried face. So the doctor sends her to the coast, to a tiny town where her aunt and uncle live, where the air is clean and the days are slow. Then she finds the mansion. It sits out by the marsh, empty and falling apart, and Anna can't stay away from it. That's where she meets Marnie, a girl who talks too much and laughs too loud and somehow pulls Anna out of herself, night after night. For a while it feels like the best summer of her life. Then Marnie vanishes, and strangers move into the Marsh House, and Anna starts digging into who her friend really was. Every answer she finds only makes things stranger, and the summer is almost over. What is Anna so afraid to remember?
