Earth is packed. Eleven billion people, and more than nine billion of them got shipped off to live in space colonies, clustered together in what they call Sides. The elites stay behind. Everyone else orbits. Then Side 3 gets tired of taking orders from the Earth Federation, declares itself the Principality of Zeon, and starts a war for independence. Eight months of the One Year War, and neither side is anywhere close to winning. Zeon should have lost on resources alone, except they built mobile suits. Giant humanoid machines, and the best pilot in the bunch is a masked man they call the Red Comet. Char Aznable flies into Side 7 chasing a rumor: the Federation is building its own prototype, a mobile suit called Gundam. His squadron tears the colony apart. A kid named Amuro Ray, whose father worked on the thing, climbs into the cockpit and actually pushes them back. Now Amuro is on the run aboard a Federation ship, and Char is still out there.
