Thirty-five years after Lynn Minmay sang the Zentradi into peace, humanity finally trusts space again. Colony fleets scatter across the stars, each one hunting for a home. City 7 drifts among them, and in its shabbier districts a guitarist named Nekki Basara writes songs he swears can change people. He plays with Fire Bomber. Small crowds, cheap amps. Then the aliens show up. They do not blow the colony apart. They drain something called spiritia, the force of a soul, and the people they touch go blank and still, like they forgot how to be alive. Maximilian Jenius, the man in charge, keeps throwing his forces into battle against them anyway. So Basara does the one thing nobody asked for. He walks his guitar straight into the crossfire and starts singing, at his own side and at the enemy both, waiting for somebody to listen. The brass thinks he has lost his mind. The pilots want him gone. Does music actually reach anyone out there, or is he just screaming into the void?
