The Exodus Project tears a hole through space and the crew of Watchers Nest gets out, leaving Earth behind. Misaki stays. She is still fighting Ghoul when the planet in front of her eyes folds shut inside a barrier of frozen time. No way back. No way forward. Then the maze starts showing them things. Earth keeps shifting shape, one version after another, because every possible now is happening at once. And Misaki is there. She should be gone, erased by the very warp that saved the others, yet she keeps turning up in different forms: the cadet from training school, the child she used to be. Are these echoes coming from somewhere outside, or from the fight going on inside her own head? Ryer and the rest just want a way home. Misaki wakes a second time, and whatever answer she reaches bends history somewhere else entirely. Can any of them still find a real happy end?
