Shinobu Oomiya spent part of her childhood in England, living with a host family and becoming close friends with their daughter Alice. Saying goodbye was hard. Neither girl could speak the other's language well, but that didn't matter much back then. Five years pass. Shinobu is fifteen, a first year in high school, and mostly just a normal Japanese girl. Then an airmail letter arrives, written in English she can't read. It's from Alice. She's coming to Japan, staying with Shinobu's family, and enrolling at her school. So the quiet routine gets a British guest who barely knows the language. Alice is thrilled. Shinobu is happy too, though a bit flustered. Their friends Youko, Aya and Karen get pulled along for the ride. Blonde hair, school uniforms, confusing customs and small everyday disasters follow, and the girls keep learning odd things about each other's countries. There's no big drama here, just five friends figuring out daily life together. But can a friendship that started across an ocean really pick up where it left off?
