In a Paris shopping arcade of the 1800s, Claude Claudel minds his family's metalworking shop, a quiet place tucked among the other stalls. Then his grandfather Oscar walks back from his travels with a girl at his side. A Japanese girl. Her name is Yune, and she is staying. Claude says no at first, then gives in, because what else is he supposed to do. Now she works as the live-in maid, sweeping floors and cooking things that smell nothing like French food, and every day throws up a new problem he never saw coming. He has to mind the shop, mind her, and somehow figure out how a person from a country he has only read about ends up in his kitchen. Slowly, without meaning to, he starts paying attention to the small things she does. She is far from home. He never asked for any of this. So which one of them is really the stranger here?
