Hotaru moves from Tokyo to a village so small the whole school fits in one room. Five kids total, every grade squeezed together. No convenience store. The bus might take two hours, if it shows up at all. Then she meets her classmates, and the quiet starts to make sense. Renge, a first grader who notices everything, the Koshigaya sisters Natsumi and Komari, and their older brother Suguru, who barely says a word. Doors stay unlocked out here. Green crowds the roads, streams run somewhere close, and the loudest thing all day is an old car rattling past. The four of them teach Hotaru how this place works. She teaches them about a city they have only heard about. Something shifts in those slow afternoons because of it. But what happens when the new girl stops being new?
