Japan is tearing itself apart, province by province, and Furuta Sasuke serves Oda Nobunaga, the most feared warlord of them all. But while other men chase land and heads on pikes, Sasuke chases something stranger: tea. A bowl, a kettle, a hanging scroll in the right alcove. Get those right and a man can live well. That is the whole idea behind the path he follows, the way of the Hyouge Mono. Then Nobunaga notices him. The lord who burns temples and reshapes the map takes an interest in the little vassal with the tea obsession, and so does Sen no Soueki, the tea master whose taste can make or break a powerful man. Suddenly Sasuke is standing in rooms where politics is decided over a cup of bitter green tea. He wants a comfortable life. He also wants the next beautiful thing so badly it makes him stupid. Those two wishes do not always point the same direction. The country keeps burning, his masters keep dying or winning, and Sasuke has to figure out what he actually is. A warrior? A connoisseur? A man who serves whoever is winning? He learned from Nobunaga and Soueki, yes, but the path he walks is his own, and it is a lot more slippery than either teacher ever warned him. When the tea is finished and the room goes quiet, what does a man like that have left to hold on to?
