Edo, 1855. In the Koishigawa district, two young men couldn't be more different. Manjiro Ibutani is a low-ranking samurai, deadly with a sword, with a blunt sense of right and wrong. Ryoan Tezuka chases women and laughs too much, but he's burning to become a doctor trained in Western medicine, a strange ambition in a country still sealed off from most of the world. Then the Tokugawa order starts to crack. Foreign ships appear, old certainties fall apart, and both men find themselves caught between the traditions they grew up with and the future bearing down on them. Manjiro wants to honor the code of his class. Ryoan cuts open bodies to learn what's inside them, which polite society considers unthinkable. Based on real people, including Ryoan, who was the great-grandfather of Osamu Tezuka. Their friendship holds through riots, epidemics and the fall of everything familiar, but how do you stay loyal to a friend when the whole country is choosing sides?
