A girl with a strange eye wanders into the wrong place at the wrong time. She mouths off to the Taira clan, the most powerful family in Japan, and they make her pay for it. Her father dies for what she said. Not long after, Taira no Shigemori, the eldest son of the clan leader, finds the same girl on the road. She calls herself Biwa now. She looks him in the face and tells him his family is going to fall. Shigemori can see the dead. Spirits crowd around him, and he knows Biwa is telling the truth. He also knows what his own people did to her father. Instead of silencing her, he takes her in. A quiet life inside a house built on blood. Soldiers gather at the borders, the clan schemes against its rivals, and somewhere down the line a war is waiting. Biwa carries her father's old instrument everywhere she goes. She has seen how the story ends, and she keeps her mouth shut about it. Shigemori wants to save his family. She is not sure she wants to help him try. Can a girl who already knows the ending change anything at all?
