Two ninja clans have hated each other for centuries, and then a warlord named Ieyasu Tokugawa orders them to stop. Swords go back in their sheaths. For a while, nobody dies. Gennosuke of the Kouga and Oboro of the Iga meet, and against every rule their families drilled into them, they fall in love. Marriage, they think, will finally end it. That is when the ground opens up. Ieyasu's two grandsons both want to be shogun, so the old man settles it with a game. Each clan sends ten of its deadliest fighters. Two scrolls list the names, and every name gets crossed out in blood when that person falls. Win, and the Tokugawa favor belongs to your clan for a thousand years. Lose, and your clan is wiped off the earth. Gennosuke and Oboro are heirs. They are also supposed to kill everyone the other one loves. Now the two of them stand on opposite sides of a war neither asked for, and the person each trusts most is the one they may have to destroy. Can love survive when the scroll in your hand has your beloved's name written on it?
