Mikan is ten, loud, and endlessly cheerful, which makes her a strange match for Hotaru, who barely looks up from her gadgets and never says more than she has to. They have been inseparable for years. Then Hotaru gets accepted to Alice Academy, a school in the city that everyone whispers about, and just like that she is gone. The rumors are ugly: kids locked away, experiments, punishments. Mikan doesn't wait around to find out if any of it is true. She packs a bag and runs off to the city alone. Turns out the rumors are only half the story. The academy is full of Alices, kids born with strange powers, and the government keeps them there to train them. Mikan has a power of her own, one nobody can quite name, so the school takes her in too. She finds Hotaru. She also finds a boy named Natsume who can throw fire and seems to enjoy making everyone miserable. Now Mikan is stuck inside the gates like everyone else, chasing a friend who barely reacts and dodging a classmate who could roast her on the spot. What is Natsume so angry about, and why does the school watch him so closely?
