As a kid, Akko watched the witch Shiny Chariot put on a magic show and walked out of it with one goal: to be just like her, someone who makes people smile. She has no magical family, no natural talent, and no shot on paper. Luna Nova Magical Academy still takes her in. The trip there goes about as badly as it could, and that's before classes even start. Then she finds it. The Shiny Rod, Chariot's own wand, sitting there practically waiting for her. It feels like proof she belongs. The school doesn't agree. Most of the girls think someone with no witches in her blood has no business walking those halls, and not one of them shares her love for Chariot. Her classmates Lotte and Sucy stick with her, which helps. Her rival Diana, gifted and beautiful and everything Akko isn't, does not. Wizardry is fading from the world, and Akko is scraping by on nerve and stubbornness instead of skill. She refuses to quit, refuses to sell out her idol, refuses to be second best. But what does being a real witch actually mean when the magic is already leaving?
