Tooru is sixteen, her mother is gone, and her grandfather's house is full of hammering and dust, so she does the only thing she can think of. She pitches a tent in the woods and tells nobody. Works her shifts, walks home in the dark, keeps her mouth shut. Then a landslide takes the tent. Yuki, the boy every girl at school watches walk by, finds her standing in the mud with nothing, and he and his older cousin Shigure offer her a room. Fine. Until she hugs someone by accident. The Souma family turns into animals of the Chinese zodiac when a person of the opposite sex gets too close, and what looks like a party trick is actually a curse they have carried for generations, one that leaves scars and breaks people quietly. Tooru starts meeting the rest of them, one relative at a time, and the more she sees, the less any of it looks like a fairy tale. So what happens when the kindest person in the house decides she wants to break a curse that nobody has ever escaped?
