Episode 17 · Den-noh Coil

Den-noh Coil

Yasako just moved to Daikoku City with her mom and little sister, and the place runs on augmented reality glasses the way other towns run on weather. Put them on and the streets fill up with things nobody else can see: old space junk, stray creatures, thick cyber fog rolling between the buildings. Her grandmother runs a shop out of the house, Megasia, stacked with illegal gadgets that poke at parts of the virtual world kids are not supposed to touch. Then Densuke, Yasako's cyberdog, chases something strange into a dead zone and gets stuck there. Fumie, a loud kid who treats the whole city like a game board, pulls him out, and just like that Yasako is part of Coil, her grandmother's unofficial club of kids who hunt down glitches and viruses before the adults notice. Fine. Except another girl is already hunting the same things, and she is not friendly. They call her Isako because there are two Yuukos now, and she tears through code with the kind of skill that makes kids twice her age nervous. Coil wants answers about the corruption spreading under the city. Isako wants something else, and the closer they get to her, the less any of it looks like a game. Somebody in this town knows why people keep vanishing. The question is whether finding out is worth what it costs.
