Takato spends his afternoons shuffling cards with his friends, lost in a game where monsters fight and grow stronger with every swipe. Then one morning a blue card turns up in his deck, one he has never seen before. He runs it through his reader. The thing cracks open into a device, and the device looks at the doodles in his sketchbook and builds a Digimon out of them. An egg appears. It hatches. Suddenly the creature he invented is standing in his room, breathing, hungry, and completely out of control. Here is the catch: a real Digimon is not a game piece. Guilmon needs feeding, watching, and cleaning up after, and he does not listen. Worse, a girl named Ruki has decided that Digimon exist to be beaten, their data absorbed by her partner Renamon, and Guilmon is next on her list. Takato is ten. He has no plan. He does find backup, at least: Jianliang from school, whose partner Terriermon talks back and does not care who hears it. Together the three tamers start figuring out what these creatures actually are, while something far nastier keeps breaking through from the other side. Can a kid who just wanted to play a card game hold his ground when the game starts playing back?
