She dreams of falling, then wakes inside a cocoon in a dusty old house, surrounded by women with small gray wings and glowing rings above their heads. Nobody explains much. They name her Rakka, after that dream of falling, and soon her own wings push out and a halo settles over her hair. The town is called Guri, and it sits sealed behind a wall nobody crosses. Only the strange figures in cloaks come and go, and the rules about the wall are not up for debate. Then Rakka learns what happens to her kind. One day a Haibane's turn comes, a Day of Flight, and they simply leave. No goodbye, no explanation, no forwarding address. One of the older girls is gone, her room empty, and the rest of them just keep working and smiling like this is normal. Rakka starts asking questions nobody wants to answer, about where they came from, about the memories none of them have. She has wings, a halo, and a job in town, but no past and no idea what she is. The others seem fine with that. She is not. So what exactly waits at the end of a Haibane's life, and why does everyone act like it is something to look forward to?
