A detective named Kohachi Inugami rolls into a mountain village where dead animals keep turning up in the fields, month after month, chewed up and left to rot. He specializes in the occult, so this is his kind of mess. Then he spots a kid out in the fields, working instead of sitting in a classroom, and the other children won't go anywhere near him. They call him Dorotabou, after the mud-dwelling spirits of the rice paddies. It's meant as an insult, and it sticks. The boy's real name is Kabane Kusaka. Nobody has bothered to use it in a long time. What Inugami notices, though, is that the smell everyone mocks might not be the whole story, and by the time the two of them start poking around together, the investigation stops being about livestock. There are creatures called Kemono walking the same streets as people, and Kabane is standing a lot closer to that world than he realizes. Maybe that name of his isn't so far off after all. What the village fears as a stench could turn out to be a sign of something much harder to explain. So what happens when a boy everyone calls a monster finally learns what he actually is?
