A transcontinental train pulls out of Chicago in the early 1930s, and two rival gangs have already decided they want it. What follows is a mess of gunfire in the dining car, bodies in the corridor, and a trail of blood stretching across the whole country. Meanwhile in New York, a scientist named Szilard and his strange assistant Ennis are tearing the city apart looking for missing bottles of an immortality elixir. And somewhere far back in 1711, a group of alchemists is about to find out what immortality actually costs. None of it connects. Except it does. A pair of cheerful thieves named Isaac and Miria wander through all of it, bumping into mobsters, immortals and hitmen like they are on vacation, and somehow tying these scattered lives together. The mob war keeps escalating. The elixir is still out there. The train keeps moving. So who exactly is going to walk off it alive?
