Ren is nine years old and completely alone in Shibuya. The one adult who ever showed him kindness is dead, and what is left of his family wants nothing to do with him. So he runs. Down alleys he does not know, past corners he should not turn, until the streets spit him out somewhere else entirely: a world of walking, talking beasts called Shibuten. A huge bear-like fighter named Kumatetsu drags the kid home, though calling it that is generous. The guy has zero students, a nasty attitude, and a real problem. The current lord of Shibuten is retiring, and only someone with a disciple can compete to take his place. So the two strike a deal. Kumatetsu gets a student. Ren, now going by Kyuuta, gets a roof and three meals. Years go by. The kid learns to fight, the beast learns to care, and neither one says it out loud. Slowly it stops mattering who is raising who. But what happens when the human world comes looking for the boy it lost?
