A white orb drifts down to Earth with no instructions and no voice to explain what it is. It sits there as a rock. Then moss creeps over it. Then a dying wolf stumbles past, and the orb copies the animal, stands up on four legs, and starts walking with no idea where it is going. Snow, wind, an empty plain. The wolf was not alone in the world: it belonged to a boy who has been waiting by himself for his tribe to come back from a paradise in the south, full of fish and fruit. The boy talks to the wolf like an old friend, shows it the marks his people left behind, and decides to go find them. So the two of them set off together, though the boy is hurt and the trail is old. When the boy dies, the orb takes his shape. Now it wears a human face and has to figure out what a human face is for. It cannot truly die, only suffer, over and over, as it meets people across the years and slowly learns what it means to be one of them. What was the boy actually dreaming about, back in that snow, and can the thing that copied him ever understand it?
