Sonia Summers got herself transferred to the worst beat in Libra: the Outside, where the fog rolls in off the port and the case files stop making sense. A kid swears a monster took his mother. A body turns up with no wounds at all. Every lead she pulls drags her closer to creatures that shouldn't exist outside of bedtime stories. Then three of them walk into her life. Bem, Bela and Belo look human enough at a glance, and that's the problem. They hunt the youkai that prey on people, and both sides hate them for it: their own kind calls them traitors for playing house, humans scream and reach for something sharp the second the human skin slips. They keep the peace anyway, because staying close to people is the whole point. Somewhere under all that fighting, they're chasing something they won't say out loud, a chance to wake up one morning and be fully human. So why does a detective keep taking their help? And what happens when the monsters she's supposed to arrest turn out to be the only ones standing between Libra and something worse?
