Fifteen years ago a gate tore open above the Pacific, linking our world to Leto Semani, a land of monsters and fairies. San-Teresa grew up around it, a border town, a place people pour into chasing the one thing they all want: money. Two million newcomers came through. So did the drugs, the guns, the trafficking. Kei Matoba is a cop in the new department built to clean that up, and he is good at it, though he bends a rule whenever it suits him. Then a fairy trafficking case goes sideways. His partner of four years, Rick Fury, doesn't walk away from it. Kei wants someone to pay. His reward is a new partner: Tilarna, a noble knight from the Farbani Kingdom, sent to bring back a fairy Kei ran into on that same case. Kei can't stand non-humans. She thinks he's a slob with a badge. They have to work together anyway. Two worlds, two ideas of justice, one dead friend between them. Can a guy who hates everything she is and a knight who answers to a king she can't reach ever stop fighting long enough to find the girl?
