On Mars, people stopped having kids a long time ago. Robot servants called dolls took their place, and everyone agreed that was progress. Layla Ashley never agreed. She fights for a living, wanders from town to town, and carries a past she does not talk about. Speedy, a doll breeder, tags along. So does Nei, a doll who acts nothing like a doll, and whose connection to Layla nobody can explain. Then the founders of the colony start hunting them. Not once. Again and again. Every squad they send after this odd little family peels back another layer: of who Layla used to be, of what Nei really is, of what Mars is turning into. The three of them just want to keep moving. The men who built this world have other plans, and they are willing to burn whole cities to see them through. So why does every attack feel less like a punishment and more like someone trying to remind Layla of something?
