Van wants one thing: to find the man with a claw for a hand who killed his fiancée. That is the whole plan. He drifts through the dusty towns of a planet called Endless Illusion, where thieves and killers live right next door to honest folks, and he asks his questions and moves on. In the town of Evergreen he crosses paths with Wendy, a clumsy, hopeful kid chasing after her kidnapped brother Michael. When the locals beg Van to help them fight off the bandits circling their treasury, he shrugs and walks away. Not his problem. Then the bandits make it his problem. Van calls down his armored mech, Dann, and tears through them, and what he finds in the wreckage turns his stomach: these men had ties to the Claw Man, and they took Wendy's brother for reasons nobody will explain. So now the cynical swordsman and the kid he never asked for are stuck traveling together, an odd pair with a canyon between them. Ruthless allies, noble enemies who are just doing their jobs, and a trail that keeps pointing somewhere darker than a simple murder. What exactly has the Claw Man gotten himself mixed up in, and what happens when Van finally catches him?
