A civil war has been grinding on in Gazth-Sonika for twelve years. Nobody even remembers what started it. On that battlefield a mercenary named Madlax works for no flag and no side, and she fights like something out of a legend. Far away, in the quiet European country of Nafrece, Margaret Burton lives an ordinary life. She has amnesia. Twelve years of her past are simply gone. The two have never met. They share nothing except a strange book written in an ancient language, and a shadowy group called Enfant that will do anything to get that book first. When Madlax and Margaret finally cross paths, the events of twelve years ago come rushing back, along with the truth about who they really are. What happens when the answer you have been chasing your whole life is one you cannot live with?
