A boy is born into famine, in a Japan where people eat bark and die in the streets. His mother wants nothing to do with him. So he grows up like an animal, killing what he can catch and eating whatever is left, and that includes people. Nobody gives him a name. Then a wandering monk finds him. Hoshi feeds him, calls him Asura, and teaches him a chant, the nembutsu, a few words meant to pull him back toward being human. It doesn't stick right away. Asura keeps fighting for scraps, keeps baring his teeth at anyone who comes close. But a girl named Wakasa crosses his path, and something in him starts to shake. Can a kid who learned to survive by eating human flesh ever sit at a table with other people and mean it?
