Nine students sneak into Kisaragi Academy at night. Just a silly courage test, a chance to scare each other in the dark. Before that they tear paper charms into little doll shapes, the kind you pass around so everyone stays friends forever. Harmless. Kids do this stuff all the time. Then the floor drops out. The school they are standing in was built right on top of Heavenly Host Elementary, a place that got bulldozed years ago after a teacher cut his students down with scissors and the whole town could not sleep until they caught him. The paper dolls were a key. Now the hallways are wrong, the windows show nothing, and the dead are not staying dead. The victims want company. The killer, well, he never really left. Friends get separated. Blood shows up on walls that were clean a second ago. Getting out means trusting people who are already starting to come apart, and every room they open digs up another piece of what happened under this ground. Who gets left behind when the exit finally appears?
