Summer 1945, Hiroshima. Gen works like an adult, tending to the sick because there is never enough food, while his mother scrapes together rice and everyone keeps repeating the same worn phrase: endure the unbearable. Three years of war between the US and Japan have taught them how to squeeze small joys out of a brutal time. Then the plane is already in the air. Nobody in the city looks up. Gen is bold, restless, and barely tall enough to carry what the day demands of him. Between caring for patients and dragging home whatever he can find, he holds on to the belief that Japan has already lost and that this means the fighting will stop soon, that Hiroshima will somehow stay untouched. And what if you knew, the whole time, what was coming for the boy who just wanted one ordinary morning?
