A lord wanted power over all of Japan, so he traded his unborn son to 48 demons. The boy arrived without limbs, without eyes, without a face worth keeping, and his father had him thrown into the river. A doctor named Jukai fished him out. He built the kid new arms, new legs, and sent him into the world with blades hidden inside the prosthetics. Fifteen years later Dororo is a scrappy little thief dodging samurai and empty stomachs in a village chewed up by war. He picks the wrong fight with a gang of thugs. Right when it turns ugly, a stranger wanders in muttering about spirits, and a monster crawls out of the water. The stranger pops off his fake arms, kills the thing, and walks away like nothing happened. Dororo follows him into the woods that night and refuses to leave. Turns out Hyakkimaru is missing 48 pieces of himself, and every demon he kills hands one back. He wanted a quiet life. The demons had other plans. So now it is just the two of them and a puppy named Nota, crossing a country where the humans are often worse than the monsters. How much of himself does he have to carve back before he can finally stand still?
