On her fifteenth birthday, the princess finds a diary her mother kept as a girl. Page after page, a secret love comes out, one the queen buried long before the wedding and the crown. So the girl does what any curious daughter would do. She walks into the forest to find the man her mother never forgot. Then she looks into his eyes, and everything tilts. The curse, the spindle, the whole story she grew up on: none of it is what she was told. This man and her mother share a past, and whatever happened between them is the real reason the shadows gathered around her cradle. Shot in Czechoslovakia just before the country split, with stop motion by Jiri Trnka's studio, the film trades fairy tale glitter for something closer to memory and regret. And when the princess finally learns the truth about her mother's first love, what is she supposed to do with a happily ever after that was never really happy at all?
