Two brothers live on a quiet island north of Hokkaido, collecting eggs and pretending to be Giovanni and Campanella from their favorite book. The war feels far away. Then August 15 arrives, and soldiers in uniforms they have never seen before come ashore. The island is suddenly Soviet territory. Junpei and Kanta, sons of a Japanese lighthouse keeper, watch their home get divided. At school they meet Tanya, the fiery daughter of a Soviet officer. She does not speak their language. They cannot speak hers. Somehow the three of them start playing together anyway, slipping away from the adults who are busy hating each other, sharing food and small jokes while the grown ups argue over who the island belongs to. Tanya's father drinks and rages. Junpei's father tries to keep the lighthouse running. The boys still dream of riding a train across the stars, but hunger and fear keep pulling them back to earth. Can a friendship that grew in the shadow of a border survive what the border is doing to everyone around it?
