Prohibition-era Lawless runs on bootleg liquor, and the police have nothing to say about it. The Vanetti family owns the streets, the cops, everything worth owning. Years ago they wiped out a man's wife and youngest son while the older boy watched. That boy buried his real name and came back seven years later as Avilio Bruno, carrying a letter from someone he has never met and a plan he has been sharpening since childhood. His way in: Nero Vanetti, the don's son. Avilio gets close, close enough to drink with him, close enough that Nero starts calling him a friend. Nero has no idea who is sitting across the table. Piece by piece, Avilio works through the men who did it, and every body he leaves behind makes the next one harder to hide. But revenge here does not stay neat. Killings breed more killings, and the friendship he built as a weapon starts to feel like something else. When the last name on his list is gone, will there be anything left of Avilio Bruno, or only the man he pretended to be?
