Thorfinn spends his days in a frozen Icelandic village, listening to the old traveler Leif talk about Vinland, a fertile land across the sea where nobody fights. He wants to see it. Then his father Thors pulls a runaway slave out of the water, and that one act drags the past right to their door. A ship of Jomsvikings appears off the coast. They want Thors back. He was their leader once, until he walked away from war in 987. Now they threaten to burn the village unless he sails with them again. He goes, to protect everyone he loves. Thorfinn sneaks along, and somewhere on that voyage the boy stops being a boy. He ends up a mercenary in the middle of a bloody mess between England and the Danes. Death everywhere, and the Vikings grinning through all of it. Thorfinn has one thing left: find Askeladd, the man who killed his father, and put a blade in him. But his father once told him there is nobody in this world it's okay to hurt. So what happens when the only road left runs straight through that promise?
