Rokurou Okajima is a Tokyo salaryman who drinks with clients more than he actually works, so when his bosses hand him a disc and send him across the South China Sea, he figures it is just another errand. Then pirates board the ship. He loses the disc, takes a few hits, and assumes that is the worst of it. It is not: the pistol comes back up, and now he is a hostage on a beat up boat called the Lagoon. Here is the part nobody sees coming. His own company writes him off, and men with guns show up to erase the pirates and the failed courier along with them. The crew should be finished. Instead, the prisoner helps them get out alive. So the man they were holding joins the crew that grabbed him, trading a gray office for Roanapur, a sweltering town where crime syndicates run everything and one wrong step gets you killed. His new partner Revy has a short temper and a very fast trigger, and she is only the first problem. Can a guy who spent his whole life bowing to managers learn to survive in a city that eats people like him?
