In Düsseldorf, a brilliant Japanese neurosurgeon named Kenzo Tenma has everything lined up: a prestigious hospital post, a fiancée who happens to be the director's daughter, a future written in gold. Then one night he goes against orders and operates on a boy with a bullet in his skull instead of the town's mayor. The boy lives. Tenma loses his standing, and then, strangely, the director and two other doctors turn up dead, and the position he was denied lands in his lap anyway. Nine years pass. A wounded man is wheeled into the hospital, Tenma patches him up, and learns the guy is tied to a string of murders across Germany. That is when the grown boy from all those years ago walks in and shoots the man dead right in front of him. Everything Tenma thought he understood about saving lives comes apart in that one moment. Now he is the one being hunted, chasing a cold young man named Johan across the country, trying to clean his own name and figure out what he actually brought back from the operating table. How do you make amends for a life you were proud of saving?
