A samurai once drove a raging beast into the ground with a legendary spear, and there it stayed for five hundred years. Then Ushio Aotsuki, a middle school kid poking around a cellar under his family temple, accidentally let it out. Soon the place was crawling with spirits, and Ushio had only one weapon: the monster itself. He named it Tora. Neither of them wanted this arrangement. It gets worse. Ushio starts to understand that pulling out that spear was never a mistake. It was his fate. At the same moment, something ancient is waking up: the White-Faced One, a yokai powerful enough to wipe the entire Japanese archipelago off the map. The only thing that can stop it is the spear and the boy holding it. So now Ushio and Tora have to fight side by side, whether Tora likes it or not, against creatures that would eat them both without blinking. And the biggest one is still on its way. Can a middle schooler and a monster who barely tolerates him really stand against something that old?
