Summer Time Rendering
Shinpei left Hitogashima Island for Tokyo and never planned on coming back. Then word arrived that Ushio, the sister he grew up with, had drowned trying to pull a child out of the water. So he stands on the pier of the small island where he spent his childhood, staring at the sea and remembering how things used to be. An accident, everyone says. Except at the funeral his best friend pulls him aside with a detail that does not fit: marks on Ushio's neck, like someone squeezed the life out of her. Around the same time, people on the island start vanishing. And Mio, the younger sister, swears she saw an exact copy of Ushio walking around three days before the drowning. There is an old story here about Shadows, doubles that show up right before a person dies. Folktales, probably. Maybe not. Now Shinpei is digging into the island's ugly side, because the last thing Ushio asked of him was to keep Mio safe. He has no idea yet what he is actually up against. How do you protect someone from a thing that wears your own face?
